Intramural

The Mercy Rule Softball Team
The body cannot function without the mind, and the mind cannot function without the body. Keep your body in shape, have fun, and get to know your fellow students. The University of Chicago hosts a large array of intramural sports with men's, women's, and coed leagues for both graduates and undergraduates. With over 15 team sports and over 10 individual sports, there's something for everyone. Intramurals provide an organized social network to help you get to know your fellow classmates and others in your department. Below is a list of some of the more unique team sports available.
- Broomball
- Imagine hockey just like you see in the NHL. Now take away the skates, swap the puck for a miniature soccer ball, and instead of using a hockey stick, you have a stick with a rubber triangle at the end. This intramural sport is played on the outdoor skating rink at The University of Chicago. Full of follies, slips, and falls (helmets are provided, but padding is recommended), it's as much fun to watch as it is to play. Don't procrastinate though, as it's one of the most popular sports and open team slots fill up fast. There are only coed leagues.
- Innertube Water Polo
- For all of those that have dreamed of being a professional water polo player but never knew how to swim well, this is the sport for you. As you can imagine, every player sits in an inflated innertube. Otherwise, everything else is pretty much the same as water polo. Being too shy to get into the water with your fellow classmates is no excuse and besides, how often do you get to try something like this?
- Ultimate Frisbee
- This sport is fairly popular on college campuses, but is nowhere near as ubiquitous as the professional sports. Similar to American football and rugby, this is a zero impact alternative that is played with a Frisbee instead of a ball. Football with a Frisbee? What next? Frisbee Golf? (Sorry to the Frisbee aficionado's, but Frolf has yet to gain enough support to be an intramural sport).
- Summer Softball League
- This league is not organized by The University of Chicago intramurals. Many have debated about which is the most important field in biology and the most important model organism. However in reality, true prominence is determined by those that dominate on the softball field. Pull up those knee high socks, roll up those sleeves, and show everyone what your department is made of!
